What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition characterized by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, leading to swelling, most commonly occurring in the arms or legs. This occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, preventing proper drainage of lymph fluid.

What can cause lymphedema?

Primary lymphedema, which is less common, is due to congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. It can be present at birth or develop later in life. It is more common in females and usually appears in the legs.

Secondary lymphedema, which is more common, is a categorization of the condition that may occur immediately following surgery, trauma, disease, radiation therapy, or chronic venous problems causing damage to the lymphatic system. Or it may appear 10-20 years or more after such events as surgery or radiation.

Symptoms of lymphedema:

  • Full sensation of the limb

  • Skin feeling tight

  • Decreased flexibility & strength

  • Skin discoloration and hardening

  • Pain in the affected limb

  • One or more episodes of infection, often called cellulitis

How can lymphedema treatment help?

Our lymphedema treatment program is designed to help our clients manage their lymphedema through a two-part program.

Phase One:

Also known as the decongestive phase, provides an intensive therapy with focus on manual lymphatic drainage massage, compression bandaging, exercises, skin care, and client education.

Phase Two:

Also known as the maintenance phase, which aims to maintain the results achieved during the decongestive phase and prevent the re-accumulation of lymphatic fluid. It involves fewer therapy visits and the completion of daily individualized home exercise program, the use of daytime and nighttime compression garment, self-lymphatic massage, and maintaining good skin care.
